This is a tin Canary cage smallish with a candle holder on the side. All tin with a sliding door and actually has some stenciling on the top (worn) and the bottom, visible. The cage is very well made and small enough to have been used in the coal mines. The old surface has a wonderful patina. Someone placed a toy Canary in the cage, composite body, tin tail and wire feet. He looks happy. Doesn't eat much. The cage is 10 1/2" tall and 9 3/4" in diameter with a handle on the top. Found in Pennsylvania from the mid to late 1800's. Miners took small cages like this into the mines with a canary in it. If the Canary died that told the miners that there was gas in the air and they should exit immediately. You can see this and other wonderful antiques in our large display at Columbia Rivertowne Antique Center, Columbia, PA. Item #4828
